The Toyota Yaris has a long and complicated history, having first been introduced as the Toyota Echo back in 1999. Through the years it has undergone several changes and shifts throughout the globe, but what is important to note is that there are two incredibly young vehicles sharing the nameplate as of the 2020 model year. On one hand, you have the all-new Yaris Hatchback that was just introduced this year. On the other, you have the 2020 Toyota Yaris, the sedan version that was introduced last year and is currently available right here in Palatine IL. It makes a great entry-level option for any driver looking for a subcompact sedan with a sporty vibe.
Although it won’t be winning too many races, the Yaris does offer a surprising amount of performance from its small frame, thanks in large part to its 2,385-pound curb weight. Regardless of trim level, the Yaris is powered by a 1.5L 4-cylinder engine capable of generating 106 horsepower alongside 103 pound-feet of torque. That doesn’t sound very powerful at all, but due to its lightweight nature it has a little more pick up than you might expect from those numbers.
More importantly, however, it has pretty incredible fuel economy despite not having a hybrid powertrain. Through city streets it achieves 30 miles per gallon and 39 mpg when you hop on the highway. When equipped with its automatic transmission option, those numbers improve by one or two as well.
Of course, it’s not all just numbers and specs. There are plenty of features that make the Yaris a great option as well. While it might not offer as many amenities as an upper echelon vehicle, such as the Avalon or even the Camry, it doesn’t offer plenty of great features and content. For instance, despite its small size it still comes equipped with a standard 7” display audio screen. It’s equipped with the smart key system and push button start, two USB ports, automatic climate control and so much more.
