After the introduction of the all-new 2019 Toyota Yaris, we were wondering if a new hatchback version would be following it. The year prior, the sedan version of the Yaris was known as the Yaris iA while the hatchback model was simply the Toyota Yaris. So, the dropping of the iA from the name threw us for a loop. We waited and waited, but no news came. That changed at the beginning of the month, when we were introduced to the 2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback in Palatine IL, before it made its debut at NYIAS.
Now, we’re stoked to know that the subcompact sedan on our lineup will be available both as a regular sedan and a hatchback model once again. The Yaris has been around longer than you might think, as it was first introduced back in 1999. It transitioned to its second generation in 2005 and then its third in 2013, which is the generation we have now, fresh off a mid-generation facelift.
The Yaris Hatchback of course underwent a facelift as well, adopting a sportier look than previous iterations and enhancing its fun-to-drive personality. Other highlights of the new model include the Low-Speed Pre-Collision Safety System and Active Safety System both coming standard as safety technologies, alongside other standard features like a 6-speed automatic transmission featuring Sport Mode, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 7” display audio screen, Bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition, a 6-speaker audio system and two USB ports.
The Yaris Hatchback’s powertrain is a 1.5L 4-cylinder engine capable of generating 106 horsepower and achieving an estimated 40 miles per gallon combined, which is a nice blend of power and efficiency for such a small vehicle.
