2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vs 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
Today we’ll compare two popular crossover SUV options from two trusted Japanese automakers: the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited and the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. Which offers more bang for your buck? Take a look.
When it comes to cargo, the 2020 RAV4 Hybrid flat-out wins. It has 37.5 cu-ft of space behind the rear seats. With the second row folded down, that space almost doubles to 69.8 cu-ft. Those numbers trump some offerings by midsize SUVs; they absolutely dominate the crossover SUV segment. The 2020 Crosstrek just can’t compare. It only has 20.8 cu-ft and 55.3 cu-ft of space. While the Crosstrek is a subcompact crossover, its singular trim is priced at a level similar to the top-tier trim of the bigger 2020 RAV4 Hybrid. Why pay more for less?
The 2020 RAV4 Hybrid, despite having a larger engine and producing 60+ horsepower more than the 2020 Crosstrek Hybrid, has better fuel economy than the Crosstrek. While Subaru has not released the full official EPA estimates for Crosstrek Hybrid fuel mileage, the combined number of only 35 mpg shows subpar performance. Some non-hybrid Honda models reach that number. The RAV4 hybrid crushing that crushes that number with its 41/38/40 mpg spread. The one thing that the Crosstrek has over the RAV4 is its plug-in ability, which allows you to drive up to 90 miles (without consuming gas) on a full charge. However, charging at home or at the rare recharging station still costs money, so those 90 miles aren’t “free.” If you have a longer commute, then the RAV4 Hybrid wins, hands down.
