One of the most iconic and recognizable vehicles in the entire industry, the Camry has been turning heads for decades. Now, a brand-new version of the vehicle will be exciting even more enthusiasts and fans of the nameplate thanks to the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD in Palatine IL. This marks the first time a Toyota Racing Development trim level has been made for the Camry family, and we’re stoked about it.
The Camry was first introduced way back in 1979 and it has been redesigned and enhanced throughout the years to become one of the best selling and most popular vehicles on the planet. Toyota Racing Development can only enhance that legacy even further, so we’re excited to see what it can do.
First things first when it comes to the first-ever Camry TRD is its powertrain. Beneath the hood isn’t just any old engine, but rather the very popular 3.5L V6 engine that’s capable of generating 301 horsepower. Alongside the engine is an 8-speed automatic transmission with both a selectable sport mode and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. This engine is the first thing that sets the Camry SE upon which the TRD trim is built apart from other grades in the Camry family.
The powertrain isn’t the only thing enhancing performance in the Camry TRD though, as a suspension package was added as well, enhancing aspects such as steering precision, handling agility and body control. The package includes a set of matte black, 19x8.5-inch wheels, stiffer coil springs, front/rear sway bars and uniquely tuned shock absorbers. The brake system is enhanced by utilizing dual-piston calipers an rotors that are 0.9 inches wider than the ones found on the regular model.
Enhancing both performance and design is the aerodynamic body kit that was added to the Camry, including a front splitter, side skirts, a rear diffuser and a spoiler on the trunk lid. The rest of the changes are design specific, including red pinstriping, stainless steel exhaust tips and a gloss black front grille with sport mesh insert on the exterior. Moving inside, enhancements include unique floor and trunk mats with TRD embroidery, an embossed shift knob, red seatbelts, black Sport SofTex-trimmed front seats with ultra-suede inserts and red accents throughout, including stitching.
