The subcompact sedan segment might be the most overlooked segment on the market. It’s filled with incredible vehicles that have a lot to offer for an extremely affordable price, but many people forget about them in favor of the more well-known names. Even on our own brand, vehicles like the Corolla and Camry get more attention to the Yaris, despite the Yaris model’s impressive value. The same could be said for the Hyundai brand and its Accent compared to the Elantra and Sonata.
We thought we’d showcase just how great the subcompact sedan segment is while also pitting these two against one another, comparing the 2019 Toyota Yaris vs 2019 Hyundai Accent. The Yaris has been around for two decades this year, and the all-new model celebrates its birthday quite well. The Accent actually turns 25 this year, having a few extra years under its belt, and it was just redesigned last year.
A once over of the table up above highlights just how similar these two subcompact sedans are to one another, but each has its clear advantages. In the first row we looked at combined fuel efficiency, one of the most important specifications to consider in the state of today’s market. The Yaris gets three extra miles to the gallon, meaning you’ll save more money at the pump and have few emissions – very important for the environmentally conscious.
The second row does tip the scales back in the Accent’s favor though, as it offers an extra 24 horsepower more than the Yaris. That’s a pretty big advantage and may lead to a more enjoyable driving experience each time rubber hits the road. The second half of the table looks at space, which is pretty much a moot point. Although the Accent offers 0.2 cubic feet of extra space, that’s hardly be enough to fit an extra grocery bag let alone anything substantial.
Therefore, this comparison comes down to a decision between power and efficiency before taking all of the other things into account – such as safety, price, standard features, et cetera.
