Two decades ago Toyota introduced the world to a revolutionary vehicle known as the Prius. While it has undergone many iterations since then and added several other nameplates to its family of vehicles, the Prius remains one of the leading vehicles in the hybrid classification as a whole. There are plenty of vehicles coming for that throne, and one of the more recent is the impressive Honda Insight. We thought we’d see how our icon measures up to this new combatant, which is actually just a returning vehicle from the past.
Pitting the 2019 Toyota Prius vs 2019 Honda Insight reminded us that in fact the Insight was one of the first hybrid competitors for the Prius, but it was discontinued in 2006, then had a second run from 2010 to 2014, before ultimately returning this year as the impressive competitor it is today.
Each vehicle has its very clear advantages, made apparent by just a single look through the table up above, but we’ll work through it row by row to give you a better idea. Often, these tables showcase very small advantages that leave the comparison somewhat ambiguous. Not today. In the first row, the Prius achieves an extra four miles per gallon more than the Insight. Four might not seem like a big number, but when it comes to fuel economy in a hybrid comparison, that’s a pretty massive advantage that will lead to some great savings at the pump.
The Insight fires back by offering a whopping 30 extra horsepower more than the Prius, though this isn’t surprising. The Prius is notorious for its lack of power, which was even worse until the current generation when it increased from 99 to 121 HP. However, is 30 HP enough to make up for the lack of fuel economy and the massive 12.3 cubic-foot deficit in cargo space, highlighted in the third row?
That’s up to you, but if you think the 2019 Toyota Prius is the right midsize hybrid sedan for you, then be sure to get in touch with us right here at Arlington Toyota today!
