When it comes to the compact sedan segment, it has been overflowing with excellent choices for decades. While it might not have the steepest competition on the market, there is plenty of depth there with a host of options to choose from. We thought we’d take a look and find out exactly how well our favorite option measures up to one of its biggest competitors by comparing the 2019 Toyota Corolla vs 2019 Volkswagen Jetta.
While the Jetta hasn’t been around quite as long as the Corolla, it’s only short by a little over a decade and has gone through seven redesigns of its own. While the Corolla is currently in its eleventh generation, we imagine its twelfth is coming up next year or right around the corner. For the Jetta, its seventh generation just kicked off this year.
Keeping that info in mind, it’s not a huge surprise that the Corolla is currently finding it difficult to keep up with the Jetta in terms of specifications. A redesign comes with a host of major upgrades, far more than an ordinary refresh you might see in the middle of a generation, and the Corolla hasn’t seen a redesign since 2012.
We expect the Corolla to surpass these numbers as it enters its next generation, but currently that’s all speculation. The good news is, the disadvantages it has aren’t that steep. As you can see by taking a glance at the table above, the Jetta generates an extra 15 horsepower more than the Corolla. However, the Jetta also weighs 74 pounds more than the Corolla, which lessens that advantage slightly. The Jetta also gets an extra 3 miles out of every gallon of gasoline, which will save you a bit of cash at the gas pump.
However, neither advantage is particularly steep, and the Corolla more than makes up for them with the standard and available features it offers.
