We realize the Toyota Yaris iA is still a fairly new vehicle. The ordinary sedan version of the regular Yaris, which is a hatchback sedan, the Yaris iA makes a fantastic option in the surprisingly diverse subcompact sedan segment. But we’re afraid it hasn’t had enough light shed on it, so we’re going to shed a little more by comparing it to one of its biggest rivals as we pit the 2018 Toyota Yaris iA vs 2018 Kia Rio.
If you’re interested in seeing how these two small sedans measure up to one another, start by looking through the table just below. In it we’ve listed some of the key specifications to consider when shopping for a sedan, and below it we’ll go into more detail on each row.
2018 Toyota Yaris iA
2018 Kia Rio
|32 mpg||City Fuel Efficiency||28 mpg|
|40 mpg||Highway Fuel Efficiency||37 mpg|
|106 HP||Horsepower||130 HP|
|2,416 lbs.||Curb Weight||2,714 lbs.|
For starters we looked at fuel efficiency, which is a key specification to consider regardless of segment, and probably one of the reasons you’ve decided to shop for a subcompact. The first row looks at city efficiency, in which the Yaris iA gets four extra miles to the gallon, and the second row looks at highway efficiency, in which that advantage drops down to just three extra mpg.
This superior efficiency does come with a bit of a drawback though, as the third row depicts. The Kia Rio offers better horsepower in the way of 24 HP, which isn’t a ton but is quite impressive. However, that advantage is diminished by the specification we looked at it Row 4. The lighter a vehicle is, the less power it needs. So the fact that the Kia Rio weighs just under 300 pounds more than the Yaris iA means the latter needs less power to match the former.
