2022 Toyota GR 86 Revealed! Here’s What We Know
Here at Arlington Toyota in Palatine, IL, we have a big soft spot for the Toyota 86. Unfortunately, there was no 86 model for 2021. That’s led many enthusiasts to wonder if the 86 line had been discontinued. If you’re one of those people, don’t worry. We have good news.
Is there going to be another Toyota 86? Yes. Here’s what we know so far.
The 2022 GR 86 will feature a completely new 2.4L four-cylinder engine, up from the 2.0L four-cylinder of previous model years. The new engine will make the 2022 GR 86 do 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 6.3 seconds. For comparison, the outgoing 2020 86 did 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 7.4 seconds. Preliminary tests place the 2022 GR 86 somewhere around 232 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.
Balance and Handling
The new GR 86 will keep the low center-of-gravity and front-end/rear-end balance from prior models. However, this new GR 86 uses aluminum roof panels and aluminum fenders alongside updated front seats and mufflers to reduce weight. Body rigidity has also been improved. In particular, torsional rigidity has been increased by approximately 50% for great steering stability.
Thanks to its partnership with Subaru, Toyota has been able to include the Subaru EyeSight Drive Assist Technology suite on the 2022 GR 86. The package comes with numerous safety features found on and developed for the Subaru BRZ performance coupe, such as special pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise control systems.
