New Toyota Hot Hatch Details and Delay
Hatchbacks have always been popular. They’re a great balance of stylish and efficient. In fact, they’re so efficient that they’re often used for racing. The VW Golf R, the Ford Focus RS, the Audi S3, the Renault Clio RS, the Honda Civic Type R…all are recent examples of the fantastically popular hot hatches. And it seems that Toyota wants a piece of the pie. The Toyota Yaris has made a few attempts, like the Yaris SR and limited-run GRMN, but it hasn’t manufactured a full-production racing-centric hot hatch. Until now.
Here are the available Toyota Yaris GR-4 details.
GR Reveal Delayed
The GR-4 Yaris prototype was teased on Twitter by Toyota Europe. The Tweet announced a reveal set at Rally Australia on Nov. 17. However, as of writing, there is no sign of the GR-4. Naturally, this is due to the bushfires rampaging through New South Wales. This has left people speculating as to what the ‘4’ in GR-4 refers to. Some have posited that it means the GR-4 will be AWD, while others think it could mean that it sports a 4-cylinder engine. If stories published in Japan’s Motor Magazine are to be believed, then the GR-4 will have AWD and a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. However, these details have yet to be confirmed by Toyota. Either way, we hope to hear more from Toyota before the end of the year.
Multiple Performance Variants
Last year’s Yaris GRMN was an attempt by Toyota “to establish more of a link to the [sic] rallying.” And while we still have yet to learn more about the GR-4, there are already TRD and Modellista kits in the works for the European 2020 Yaris. Time will tell which, if any, of those options make it over to the States.
